UNZA STUDENTS RIOT AND LOOT SHOPS
HUNDREDS of students from the University of Zambia, the country’s highest learning institution and Africa’s Number 6 Best University which is popularly known for having more riots than graduation ceremonies last night ran amok, breaking into shops within the vicinity of the institution, looting them and stoning innocent people and cars along Great East Road over the cancellation of UNZASU elections.
The students were angered by the cancellation of students union elections. The angry students blocked Great East road with drums, stones, burnt tyres and while exploring their hidden talents and tapping inspiration from King David they started stoning motor vehicles and innocent people thinking it was Goliath.
According to the police, and eye witnesses the notorious students also broke into five shops within the university and walked away with various groceries of different types whose value is yet to be established. Police responded not quickly enough but prevented further looting and damage as they arrested 10 dull and unlucky people including five Notorious UNZA students Aka Mumbwa Students slightly after midnight. Police officers have been deployed around the campus and are monitoring the situation and investigations into the matter are still ongoing, Zambia Police Service spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed in a statement.
Student protests following the cancellation of Student Union elections highlight the deep-seated concerns and frustrations within the student body. While these grievances are valid, resorting to rioting, looting shops, and stoning cars is counterproductive and harmful. It is essential for students to explore alternative avenues for change, such as open dialogue and peaceful protests, to effectively address their concerns. Ultimately, the path to resolving these issues lies in fostering a cooperative and constructive relationship between students and university administrators, with the goal of creating a more equitable and transparent electoral process for all.
